The value of rootstock

Rootstock is the lower part of a plant multiplied using the grafting technique.

A grafted variety is obtained from the union of two plants: the lower one (the rootstock) provides the root and a part of the stem, the upper part is the foliage.

For plums and apricots, the best rootstock is the cherry-plum, a tree originally from the Caucasus and introduced to Europe in pre-Roman times, known also as myrobalan plum.

In the Riviera, peach trees yield the best results on the GF677 (peach-almond hybrid).

Applepear and cherry trees are grafted onto the “franco” rootstock (a tree from the seed of the same species of fruit as the one we want to graft).
